b'Ken NicolHere, give this a try, play it for a while and tell me what you think. So spoke Roger Bucknall as he gave me my first opportunity to experience a Fylde Guitar.I took the Fylde on the road with me. The only acoustic instruments Ive since performed and recorded with have been produced in Rogers workshop. In 2004, two years after joining Steeleye Span, I was afforded the privilege of specifying exactly what I wanted in a guitar, the Fylde Ken Nicol Signature Model, an instrument Im immensely proud of.Id played guitars that had plenty of volume and power, and Id played guitars that had depth and richness in tone; how much of these two qualities would it be possible to combine in one instrument, I asked? Also, because I incorporate an electric, lead guitar style of playing on the acoustic, having a neck with the just the right shape and thickness was paramount. Rogers answer was to use the dimensions of his Falstaff model, and whilst retaining the Rosewood sides and back, replacing the Spruce top with Western Red Cedar. Both in tone and feel the end product surpassed my expectations and has consequently received exceptional reviews in guitar magazines.By the way, each and every one of those necks is shaped with incredible precision by Rogers own intuitive hands. How? - I have no idea! The other two Fylde guitars I now routinely take to my gigs, are the Junior Signature model, and the Oberon, of which Ill usually have tuned to Open C and DADGAD tunings respectively.Since the day Roger handed me that first Fylde guitar Ive never really looked back, because as many a musician will attest, there really is no substitute for confidence, and when you have the right instrument in your hand you can stop worrying, and start performing.11'
