b'View from ringside.Finally the big fight rumbled around and, having spent so much of the previous month getting to know and like Ricky and his entourage, I felt a large part of myself sliding towards the mentality of supporter rather than reporter. As a journalist, you obviously have to curb that inclination and deliver objectively your view of the action - which was a shame because the bout itself did not match the hype that had preceded it. So the report that follows on the next page was not one that I enjoyed writing. I wanted to deliver 1,000 words of eulogy, dripping with admiration and sparkling superlatives. Instead . well, what I wrote instead is there for all to see and having watched the fight again, I stick by my assessment. I did wonder, however, at Rickys honesty. The fight turned in the fifth round when Urango suddenly made a contest of it because thereafter, Rickys workrate dropped and he seemed to play a far more cautious game. Afterwards, inhis press conference, he could have used that fifth round as an excuse, he could have said that he had got injured and was trying to protect himself and afterwards merely survive. That would have been explanation enough - because it did indeed look as though that was what had happened.But he chose not to. He just praised Urango and his sheer toughness. So I found my thoughts returning to my conversation with Kerry Kayes and Billy Graham a week before and the debate on the physiological effects of the life of Fatton. Is it his weight issues that have slowed him down? Did we witness that in the arena that night? I hope not - but you have to ask the question. I hope, too, that Ricky will answer it next time out and in the way that he would want to.
